China has made a revolution in the field of clean energy, surpassing all Western countries in its production, writes the British magazine The Economist.
According to the publication, the country has installed almost 900 gigawatts of solar capacity — more than Europe and the United States combined. Last year, China generated 1,826 terawatt-hours of electricity from solar and wind — five times the energy equivalent of all its nuclear warheads.
The Economist notes that China has become a "new type of superpower" - an energy superpower. It is capable of producing almost a terawatt of renewable power per year, which is comparable to 300 large nuclear power plants. Thanks to large-scale production, the cost of energy is constantly falling, and domestic demand is driving further growth.
China has already exceeded most of the climate pledges made after the Paris Agreement and plans to more than double its renewable energy capacity and cut emissions by 2035.
Пекін також активно експортує свої технології. Країни, що розвиваються, де вирішується результат боротьби зі зміною клімату, стають головними споживачами китайських сонячних панелей та обладнання для зберігання енергії.
At the same time, according to the publication, China's energy transformation is dictated not by altruism, but by pragmatism: the country reduces its own climate risks and strengthens its economic position.
